Goatherd Book Club: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

The Goatherd book club gathered at Sour Cherry Farm for its discussion on “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” by Carson McCullers. Because Boo has been a fan of the book for most of her life, she was invited as a special goatherd guest. Kate, a new member of the book club, also made her premier appearance.

And Kris, who was discussion leader for the book this time, also surprised everyone with a lovely treat of oysters, grapes and champagne, which was the menu at the famous lunch that Carson McCullers held with Isak Dinesen and Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

Other than cabbage — and Kris and Tom’s aforementioned oyster feast — we took our cues for dinner from Carson’s Southern heritage, rather than from the book. Because frankly, even though a restaurant called The New York Cafe is an important setting in the book, most of the food mentioned was nothing to get excited about.

For cocktails, we chose lemonade, because at Mick’s party, they ran out of punch and her parents made lemonade to substitute.

We offered three kinds of lemonade: Daddy’s Lemonade (with vodka), Mommy’s Lemonade (with bourbon) and virgin lemonade.

For snacks, we had pimento cheese tea sandwiches and pickled vegetables:

Kate, our newest goatherder, also brought an amazing selection of cheese she’d had at a tasting at Darien Cheese & Fine Foods earlier in the day.

The crowd gathered with cocktails in the foyer:

Delishy oysters:

To Carson!

Next, Kris blew everyone’s doors off by giving a multimedia presentation:

To continue the Southern theme, we served ham and biscuits for supper:

Another great book. Another great book club. Welcome Kate. Thanks for coming, Boo. Until next time, when we meet at Rory’s to discuss The Sun Also Rises.
