Greg’s Birthday Present: The Makings for Sauerkraut

For Greg’s birthday, I got him something he’s been searching for a long time: a sauerkraut crock. Sounds silly, we know, but he’s been searching high and low for one at thrift stores and garage sales for as long as I can remember. So when I came across a brand-new sauerkraut crock on Amazon.com, I knew. And, having read Jeff Gordinier’s fun (and enlightening) profile on Sandor Katz a few weeks before (Better Eating, Thanks to Bacteria), I also knew the perfect accessory for said crock: A copy of “The Art of Fermentation,” Katz’s bible on how bacteria transforms everything from apples to yogurt.

Needless to say, Greg loved the gift. SCF fans may remember that we made sauerkraut seven years ago (seven!) and again in 2007. We’ve even had a party serving choucroute garnie made with our own kraut. We are looking forward to another sometime in mid-winter.

Meantime, before we devour the kraut, Greg is devouring the book at every chance he gets.

Happy birthday Greg!
