BDoF: James Turrell at the Guggenheim

Our SCF BDoFs (Big Day of Fun) aren’t nearly as big as they used to be. We had a great time at the James Turrell exhibit of Aten Reign at the Guggenheim. But BDoF used to mean lunch, a museum, cocktails and dinner. Now, it’s just a museum. But don’t cry for us, SCF fans. We just love being at home more than ever. Maybe it’s that little srimp? Yes, of course it is.

At times, Aten Reign — displayed using screens and color around the rotunda of the musuem — looked like an egg, a saucer, a UFO, a salad bowl, and, if you blurred your eyes just right, a single, vibrating color.

Iltar, another installation, disrputed your sense of perception: you couldn’t tell if it was a black square painted on a wall or a canvas hovering 5 or so inches out from the wall. It turned out it was a 10-foot recess in the wall. Rather mindblowing.

The room was completely dark, except for those side lights, and only a few people could go in at once. Hence, a long line.

On the way home, we noted the giant and beautiful flag hanging above the bridge in commemoration of 9/11.lj091113bdof05
