A Summer Supper with Grandmom
Update on the Progress in the Fields
Grandmom came for supper the other day, and we shared cocktails while walking through the garden. First stop, the blueberries.

Ribs on the Smoker... then To the O'D's
Blueberry Slush
When I first made this recipe, it was quite the ordeal. First, we had to find the blue curacao. Then we realized we didn’t have tequila. Then we didn’t have enough limes. After a run out to get booze and more limes, Patrick came back only with limes... the liquor store had closed. So we substituted vodka. Then the blender exploded all over the counter. Let me tell you, when I sat down with this drink, I was mighty glad it was very very delicious.
Drunken Beans
Rancho Gordo’s cookbook again. He calls for using Pinto, Rio Zape, Red Appoloosa or Anasazi beans, but what I had on hand was Yellow Indian Woman beans. Delishy.... and making it into the repertoire, for sure.

Van’s Coleslaw
This here tastes to me like a real old fashioned slaw. Not too sweet, not too tangy. We got this from “America's Best BBQ: 100 Recipes from America's Best Smokehouses, Pits, Shacks, Rib Joints, Roadhouses, and Restaurants,” which credits Bob Syke’s BarB-Q in Bessemer, Ala. as the source. Turns out, Van’s parents Bob and Maxine Sykes opened the joint in 1956, and it’s still going strong. One taste of this slaw and you won’t question why.
Spicy Smoked Ribs
Memphis-Style Barbecue Ribs from Jack Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tenn. The recipe from “America's Best BBQ: 100 Recipes from America's Best Smokehouses, Pits, Shacks, Rib Joints, Roadhouses, and Restaurants.”
Summertime, and the Grilling's Easy
It’s Memorial Day weekend at the farm, and that means grillin’. We did ourselves up some juicy burgers on Saturday night.
Sunday Night Supper: Wings and A Wedge
The Hunna shopped, cooked and cleaned up on Sunday. He prepared a lovely meal of smoked wings and a wedge. He tossed his with some Louisana sauce mixed with sriricha and went with a homemade blue cheese dressing. I had mine plain and went with ranch.

Out in the Fields, Building Beds
We got busy in the fields Sunday, giving our new friends at the farm a proper place to stay. We planted the lingonberries in front of the rock and the black currants next to the fence. I also took a little tour of the garden. Little fruits are everywhere! Here is our very first Anjou pear.
Iron Pizza Chef, Battle VIII
I don't know. I guess we had the pizza bug this week. Second battle:

Egg and baby arugula. Pepperoni and green olive with baby arugula.
Egg and baby arugula. Pepperoni and green olive with baby arugula.
Welcome to the Farm, Lingonberries and Black Currants!
Iron Pizza Chef, Battle VI
It’s time for Iron Pizza Chef again! (For previous battles, please click here. ) In one corner, green olives and pepperoni. In the other, fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes and basil.
Green Chile Pork Posole
I love posole, the Mexican soup with pork, hominy and chilies. When I lived in Mexico eons ago, the family spent days making it in preparation for a Mother’s Day feast. It took so long that I’ve never made it for fear I would start it and not be finished the following week. So when I came across a recipe in Bon Appetit magazine that looked like it could be done only a few moments, I rushed out to the store. The key? Pork tenderloin instead of cut of pork that needs to be braised low and slow. Oh, and canned hominy, of course.

Mother's Day Supper at the Ranch
I’m not ashamed. On Mother’s Day, my mom cooked for me. I’d much rather that than fight the crowds for a mediocre buffet brunch. Wouldn’t you?
Saturday Night Suppa: Cedar Planked Scallops with Corn and Bacon
Our first experiment with cedar-plank cooking a resounding success, we decided to experiment again, this time with scallops. Another success, folks. This stuff is easy peasy.
Pulled Pork and Brisket at Townline BBQ in East Hampton
What? We already talked about Townline BBQ. Did you think we weren’t going to stop for lunch on the way out of town?

Pizza at Matto
We decided it was time to pull up stakes. So after another movie (The Soloist), we settled in for our last dinner of the trip: pizza at Matto, a new restaurant in East Hampton.

A Visit to the Home of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner
What else do you do when it’s raining and you’re at the beach? Why visit Jackson Pollock’s house, of course.
Lobster Rolls on Long Island
There’s something about beach — even cold and rainy beach — that makes you long for lobster rolls. Boo and I were very happy.
Magic Hour is Freezing, But We Persevere
Stuart's Fish Market in Amagansett
The plan after Channing Daughters was to pick up some barbecue at Town Line Barbecue (warning: very annoying music), open up a couple bottles of Channing Daughters rose and head for the beach. Of course, this being the week of crap weather, that didn’t work out for us in any way, shape of form. We ended up at Stuart’s Fish Market in Amagansett. The local oysters were amazing:
An Enlightening Visit to Channing Daughters
We’ve been big fans of Channing Daughters wines for a long time. (Here’s a a post from where we’re enjoying the 2004 rosé!) So we were really looking forward to our visit to the winery, which is in Bridgehampton, on the South Fork. After visiting, we were full of even more admiration. Christopher Tracy, a partner and the winemaker, was delightful, and we admired his creativity, ingenuity and high standards. It would be how we’d like to run a winery. Or a farm. A real one, that is.
Don’t Miss These Fabulous Posts!
I’ve been playing quite a bit of catch-up on SCF this week. You’ll notice our March trip to NYC is all finished, and I’ve also posted about Easter and a few suppers at the farm. Scroll down to see them. Off the home page are also these posts from past months:

South Fork Wine Tasting: Wolffer Estate
Funny. The only time we had an appointment all week was also the only sunny window we had all week. Oh well. I’ve always wanted to visit Wolffer Estate.
Burgers at the 1770 House. Worth the Trip Out East
After seeing State of Play at the East Hampton movie theater, we meandered down Main Street to check out the The 1770 House. Oh my God what a delicious burger:

Palates weary of tiny sips, we were ready to sit down and relax with a real drink. We headed for The American Hotel in Sag Harbor.
North Fork Wine Tasting: Osprey's Dominion
And for our final stop on the tasting tour of the North Fork, we visited Opsrey’s Dominion. Awful name. Ugly label. Cheesey tasting room. Pretty darn good wine!
North Fork Wine Tasting: Bedell Cellars
The tasting tour continues with a stop at Bedell Cellars. We also visited this one last year, and quite liked it. The tasting room is one of my favorites.
North Fork Wine Tasting: Shinn Estate
SCF fans will remember our visit in September to Shinn Estate. We wanted Boo to also get to enjoy the wines. And there are many wines to enjoy.

North Fork Wine Tasting: Lieb
Our next stop on the tasting tour was at Lieb Family Cellars. SCF fans will remember our visit there in September, when we leared we were particular fans of the pinot blanc. We still are. This is the second label, called Bridge Lane.
The Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck
After Love Lane Kitchen, we popped into the Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck. We just can’t resist, you know.
Lunch at Love Lane Kitchen
For lunch, we lucked into some truly delicious food! Love Lane Kitchen, an adorable little cafe in Mattituck, does its own homemade corned beef. That, and every thing else we tasted, was made with care.

North Fork Wine Tastings: Jamesport Vineyards
The very next winery along the route is Jamesport Vineyards. We liked the wines, but found the barn was a little musty.
North Fork Wine Tasting: Paumanok
The weather being crap, we decided to head immediately to the North Fork for some wine tasting. Our first stop was Paumanok, a winery highly recommended by Lettie for its Chenin Blanc. We got to taste the first of the new vintage.
A Low Key Start on Long Island
We arrived in Amagansett late afternoon Sundee, and set about making a delishy pasta dinner foraged from Gracie’s Ravioli in Nyack.
Saturday Supper at the Farm: Burgers, Again
Another round of burgers at the farm Saturday night, this time shared with Boo, Rory and the Ranchers:
Celebrating at 42
A mighty fun evening at 42, perched high above Westchester at the top the Ritz in White Plains. It started with cocktails.
