Sunday, November 6th, 2011Saturday Night Supper: Pork Stew and Recession Sidecars
Sunday, January 30th, 2011Recession Sidecars? Yes. When you’ve got a big bottle of brandy you bought for a punch, sometimes you have to use it up. Even though you’d rather have cognac. We sipped these while putting the finishing touches on our Roman Pork and Apple Stew, a revelation of a dish that we will be making again. Soon.
Roman Pork and Apple Stew
Sunday, January 30th, 2011I came across this recipe in “An Apple Harvest: Recipes and Orchard Lore” by Frank Browning and Sharon Silva (10 Speed Press). It turns out to be fabulous — and unlike most anything you’ve ever tasted. Try it. You’ll see.

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011Apple-Pear Crisp
Saturday, October 2nd, 2010I have found a gold standard for crisps: a nutty, dark topping with plenty of oats and nuts, and a snappy, bright filling with lemon and ginger. I just love the contrasts of both tastes — high notes of lemon and ginger, a baseline of brown sugar and walnuts and a melody of apples and pears — and textures — the nuts are crunchy, fruit still has texture, but the juices are soppy and sweet. I’m not sure how I first stumbled upon it, but I do know where: A recipe by Nancy Baggett that appeared in the Washington Post in 2003. I’ll post it, with step-by-step photos, after the jump.
The Farm’s First Pear Harvest
Saturday, September 4th, 2010We finally got a harvest from our Anjou pear tree. We planted it at least four years — four years! maybe five! — ago.
How exciting!
Garden Update: Coneflowers, Cosmos, Blackberries and Butterfly Bushes
Sunday, July 25th, 2010Here’s our occasional update on the progress in the fields at Sour Cherry Farm. The early summer harvest is slowing down, and we’re getting more flowers and ornamentals as we wait for late summer tomatoes and fall crops like figs, apples and pears. Here’s a look at what’s going on.
Garden Update: Currants, Bees, Apples
Monday, June 21st, 2010Upon returning from Minnesota, we found many crops ripening. We harvested the currants.
Progress in the Orchards

Spring at the Farm: Asparagus, Apples and Sour Cherries
Wednesday, April 7th, 2010Things are blooming here at the farm! We’re very excited to see a gazillion blossoms on our apple, apricot and cherry trees. And tonight is also the first asparagus harvest. Here are a few photos of the progress in the fields.
