Irene’s Birthday Dinner at o lar in Piermont

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I almost wouldn’t post this meal if it weren’t for the wonderful time we had celebrating Irene’s birthday. I mean. How many times can you go to a restaurant in just one month? Three, I guess. The answer is three. So here’s o lar again.

These goat cheese croquettes are not the most beautiful things in the world, but man were they delicious. Just a mouthful of oozy, melty, yummy cheese and a nice bit of pork in there, too. Yowza.

And while we didn’t go crazy for the pizza the first couple times, maybe we didn’t get the right pizza. This one, with speck and potatoes and fontina, was delicious. We also asked for it well done — and it still could have been done more. Next time — because let’s face it, people, there will be a next time — we will ask them to burn it.

Pizza at the Mountain House

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Boo came to spend the weekend at Sour Cherry Farm, and we made supper on Friday night easy by heading out for pizza at the Mountain House. You’ve seen photos of the pizza there already (link here) and good thing, because I forgot to snap photos of our food. But here we are!

And here’s the rest of the folks:

Dinner at o lar in Piermont

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Everybody around Nyack and Piermont has been buzzing about O Lar, the new restaurant with the wood-burning oven just north of downtown Piermont. We snuck in early one weeknight and snagged a table, but otherwise, hard to know whether we would have gotten in — especially toting Srimp along. We were glad we did. Eating there is like visiting a (very talented) friend who makes you feel welcome, serves you some really good food and sends you away happy and well fed.

Great Pizza at Polpettina in Eastchester

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

I’ve been hearing good things about Polpettina in Eastchester for the past year or so — and for good reason. The pizza at is terrific. It’s not cooked over a coal fire — not even a wood fired oven — just a regular pizza oven. But the ingredients are excellent and the care they take in making the pizza is obvious. They even hand snip the basil to order.

Wine and Pizza at Battonage

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Being in Pleasantville for a showing of Casablanca at the Jacob Burns Film Festival, we  decided to give the new wine bar, Battonage, a try. It’s a nice alternative to the other restaurants in town, which are either pubs or high-end. This fits the middle ground nicely.

Grilling Pizza on a Stone

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Greg was shopping in Williams-Sonoma the other day, and came across these granite tiles meant to go on your grill for cooking pizza. He thought: “Hey, that seems cool, but I already have a pizza stone.” Yes, we did. So we tried it on the grill.

Pizza at Cassie’s in Orangeburg

Friday, May 27th, 2011

To start the Memorial Day weekend off, Greg and I headed to Lowe’s for our home-related purchases and then out for pizza. Cassie’s makes a fine one in its coal-fired oven.

Pizza Saves the Porch Night

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Irene came over for a glass of wine on the porch, and we found ourselves enjoying the warm weather so much that we didn’t want to leave to go downtown to the pub. We scrounged in the kitchen and found Boboli crusts, a jarred sauce, slab bacon, onions and fresh mozzarella. Sounds like supper to me!

Sorry no photos of the porch. It was fun, though!

Pre-Theater Dining at Gallo Nero

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

A warm spring evening. Tickets to “Anything Goes.” A sip and a snack with my friend Kelli. How lucky are we!

Lunch at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester

Friday, March 25th, 2011

I can’t say enough good things about Tarry Lodge. We went for lunch on Friday to say goodbye to a friend and colleague, Mary Lynn, and had another delicious meal. I tried the asparagus Milanese:

Soft-cooked egg over grilled asparagus with crispy speck. Yes!

Pan Pizza from Old World Market

Friday, March 18th, 2011

We’ve tried another method for homemade pizza: buying dough from Old World Market rather than making it ourself. You know what? Pretty darn good!

Saturday Night Pizza

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

We stayed in and took it easy Saturday night. Greg made deep dish pizza — the same recipe from a few weeks back. I like that you do everything from scratch. Sure beats Boboli!

One year before: Urban Italian’s Sheeps Milk Ricotta
Two years before: Amazing Vietnamese Food in Austin
Three years before: Pink Drinks for Valentine’s Day.
Four years before: The Gumbo of the Gods
Five years before: A Nor’easter Lashes Sour Cherry Farm, and That’s a Good Thing

J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets at the O-V-I

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Another Sunday, another playoff game, another turn down at the pub. Again, Boo was with us.

Sorry for the blur.

Deep Dish Pizza: Cook’s Illustrated Strikes Again

Friday, January 14th, 2011

OK, I don’t know what’s come over me. I said in this post here on Cook’s Illustrated’s Pot Roast that I’d mostly given up using Cook’s Illustrated recipes because they were too fussy. But this recipe is like they read my mind or something. I mean, I have the big book of Cook’s Illustrated America’s Test Kitchen TV recipes for ten seasons, but when I looked up the recipes for deep dish pizza, they seemed awfully long. But Greg was watching America’s Test Kitchen and saw this version. Alas, it wasn’t in the book, but he wrote it down, and we dutifully made it. Well worth it. And not at all fussy. Really easy, in fact. And very delicious.

OVI for Wings and Pizza

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

On the night before the night before Christmas, no one was stirring — a pot, that is. We knew we’d have enough cooking coming up over the next two days, so we took to the pub. And Olde Village Inne has some of the best wings out there:

Lunch at Coppa in the South End

Monday, November 29th, 2010

After my morning walk, I headed back to the apartment Greg and I rented on Marlborough Street to see how his highness was doing. (Sorry: no photos of the apartment, I forgot. But you can check it out on VBRO.com here.) He was ready for lunch. Jessica and Kelly were still at the hospital with pre-op appointments, so we headed to Coppa, the restaurant owned by Jamie Bissonette, whom I profiled in this story here about up-and-coming chefs. The pizza was terrific.

Delicious Pizza at Motorino

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

What would a weekend in New York be without trying some fancy, artisanal, Neapolitan-style pizza? Nothing. The answer would be nothing. So we found ourselves at Motorino.  The weekend is saved. We are happy.

Iron Pizza Chef: Pizza Night in America

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

It’s Pizza Night in America, folks. And normally, that means we can expect a pepperoni-olive from our man Gregory. But not today folks.  I was shocked — shocked — to see that Greg strayed from his usual.
