At Barcelona in Greenwich, with Christian Petroni

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

SCF fans will remember Christian Petroni, the former chef at Peniche in White Plains. Well last September, he went to a new place called Barcelona, just over the border in Connecticut. I’d been meaning to visit ever since. And then, when I saw him take home the $10,000 prize on “Chopped” earlier this season, I knew I had to go. It had been too long!

Along for the ride were Karen, my friend from work, and Tasha, from next door (no photos of Tash, though!). We started with some olives. Simple, but delicious, with herbs and orange zest:

Get Thee to The Cookery

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

I had a lovely supper with Marissa and Boo at The Cookery. We even tried lambs brains ravioli! I wasn’t too keen on it, but you know what? It tastes like butter.

Dinner at La Condesa in Austin

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

On Saturday night, the adults got some of their own fun time. First, we headed to supper at La Condesa, a new-ish modern Mexican restaurant downtown. Wow. Was that food amazing.

Tacos, Tortillas and Tecate: Lunch at Guero’s

Friday, April 16th, 2010

After I remembered, sadly, that the old Las Manitas had been torn down to make room for more condos in downtown Austin — there are two photos of the exterior in this post here — Greg and I were at a loss for where to eat, until Sarah suggested Guero’s on South Congress. How could we forget? Here, the taco al pastor and the taco carne guisada:

Lunch at Frank: Hot Dogs of All Kinds

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Sarah and the girls and I headed to Frank, the artisan hot dog place in Austin, for lunch on Thursday. All in all, good food. But something about the atmosphere was a little annoying. For one thing, it was super-loud. And echo-y. It made it hard to get comfortable and settle in for what turned out to be some really good grub. Plus, bonus points for how cute the bar is:

Step 1: Arrive in Austin. Step 2: Eat Barbecue.

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

SCF fans, we’ve been on the road. We caught a 7 a.m. flight out of Newark. Read and slept on the plane. Sarah picked us up at the airport. After we got to meet the lovely and talented Jane Addison Waggoner, we got straight to it: we got in line for some of the best barbecue around.

At the Bar at Mima, Book in Hand

Friday, April 9th, 2010

It had been quite a while since I visited Mima in Irvington, so a couple of Fridays ago, I took my book to the bar and had some wine while I waited for Kelli to finish putting her children to bed so she could sneak out and meet me (don’t worry; Patrick was home!).

I got a little peckish, and, knowing Kelli would be coming to help, I ordered the five-by platter of meat and cheese.

Antoine McGuire’s in Haverstraw

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Another in the fine line of Small Bites products: First Taste: Antoine McGuire’s in Haverstraw. SCF fans, please enjoy again.

My first thought when leaving Antoine McGuire’s a few weeks ago? When can I come back? That’s a good sign indeed. The place is gorgeous, the food is great and the service was friendly and fun.

One of my favorite dishes, the Lump Crab Meat Refrigerator Cake:

Soft, sweet crab meat with a delightful crunch of panko on top.

Easter Brunch at the Hudson House

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Small Bites fans will also recognize the food in this post, which I first wrote here: Brunch at the Hudson House in Nyack. But SCF fans also get the bonus of family photos. Hold on. That is a bonus, right?

So here we go:

On Easter Sunday, I went to brunch at the Hudson House. The problem at the Hudson House has always been a great one to have: do you get the amazing eggs Benedict or stray and try something else? Now the problem is even worse. The “something else” includes such tempting items as this HH Country Breakfast: two eggs any style, country ham, house english muffin, sausage cream gravy. The muffins are made in house, and chef Christopher Dunn’s sausage cream gravy puts many Southern versions to shame.

Here’s the other problem. Now there are not only the best regular eggs Benedict, there’s another choice — what I’m calling “Fancy Eggs Benedict.” They come with prosciutto, pencil asparagus, grilled artichokes, english muffin and truffle vinaigrette. Photos of that, and the gorgeous Bloody Mary, after the jump.

Dinner at Birdsall House in Peekskill

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Small Bites fans will recognize this post, but here it is again for SCF.

I’m in love with Westchester’s newest gastropub: Birdsall House. Owners John Sharp and Tim Reinke, along with chef Matt Hutchins, have found just the right balance between casual and serious, in everything from the food to the decor to the service. My first clue, an excellent chicken terrine:
