After our tour of UVA and downtown Charlottesville, we were ready for a little pick-me-up. A Cherry Lime Soda and a seat at the soda fountain at Timberlake’s Drugs was, if you’ll excuse the saying, just what the doctor ordered.
The drug store is along the pedestrian mall in downtown Charlottesville, on the other end from our hotel.
It really is a drug store in front. I even bought some contact lens solution there.
But in the back is a real lunch counter and tables, with dark mahogany trim and a decidedly turn-of-the-last-century feel.
Much has been made of this in the press.
Greg got a chocolate egg cream… one of his favorites:
I had the cherry lime soda. We shared a pimento cheese sandwich.
The woman behind the counter really did squeeze limes and add cherry flavoring (OK not real, but still) and seltzer to my cup. She handmade Greg’s egg cream and toasted our sammy, too.
A great little place to stop and relax while sightseeing in Charlottesville. And you can make your drug store purchases at the same time!
The 411 on Timberlake’s Drug Store: In the front, aspirin and antacids; in the back, an old fashioned, turn-of-the-century looking soda fountain with milkshakes, egg creams and handmade sodas, along with a small lunch menu of sandwiches and burgers. Cute as a button and great for an afternoon rest for weary tourists. 322 E. Main St., Charlottesville, VA 22902. 434-296-1191.
