Goatherd: Let the Great World Spin

Our book club met at Irene’s to discuss Tom’s pick: Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Since the book was set in 1974, Irene made an aspic. Of course she did.

Cocktails before dinner:

Cocktail wieners. Very ’70s, don’t you think?

And onion dip, brie and Baby Bels? Forget it? We’ve got the 70s down pat.

Irene served her mother’s recipe for Cornish Game Hens with orange sauce:

Stuffed squash:

Iceberg with onion and French dressing. Seriously.

This was a crazy-good bacon-mushroom-cream thing:

And course, the shrimp aspic:

At the table with Greg, Kris and Kate:

Tom, Rory and John:

Irene and me:

Serving dessert, which, for some reason, I did not shoot. Was it a berry thing? (It’s been forever; I’m blogging this in January, fer chrissakes.)

And, on the way out, a profile photo of the preggers lady (which is why I’m blogging this in January; we didn’t let on about that on the blog until after the fact):
