Birthday Supper for Grandmom

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

We celebrated Grandmom’s birthday with a supper in the orchard: pork, corn and Doris’ cucumber salad. We had a plum cake to finish. An end-of-summer meal if ever there was one.

Mountain House with Grandmom

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

After spending the afternoon at Grandmom’s apartment, the family went out for an early supper: pizza at the Mountain House.

The pizza there is as good as you’ll find anywhere. Really thin crust, nice sauce. And the service is friendly. It’s an all-around great family place.

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

We didn’t have a morning present exchange this year. Instead, Mom and Leigh went to brunch and the three of us headed to Rockland Lake (for the third day in a row!) for a nice winter walk. We met back at Sour Cherry Farm around 5 for bloody marys, hibiscus margaritas, and a tamale supper.

Baking Cookies with Mom and Grandmom

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

This is not by any means a family tradition. At least not yet. In fact, I’m not sure our family has ever baked cookies together. But it might become one next year, because it was a lot of fun, and we ended up with some really delicious cookies.

Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies, Rugelach, Roasted Chestnut Cookies and Sugar Cookies.

Sunday Night Supper: Mini-Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

At first, it was just roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. But then we added some Brussels sprouts. And some roasted butternut squash with sage and thyme. Lo and behold — we had a mini-Thanksgiving on our hands:

Best part? We did the whole meal in just a little over an hour. Think about it. If you’re having 6 people or less for Thanksgiving — this is all you really have to do.

Easter Brunch at the Hudson House

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Small Bites fans will also recognize the food in this post, which I first wrote here: Brunch at the Hudson House in Nyack. But SCF fans also get the bonus of family photos. Hold on. That is a bonus, right?

So here we go:

On Easter Sunday, I went to brunch at the Hudson House. The problem at the Hudson House has always been a great one to have: do you get the amazing eggs Benedict or stray and try something else? Now the problem is even worse. The “something else” includes such tempting items as this HH Country Breakfast: two eggs any style, country ham, house english muffin, sausage cream gravy. The muffins are made in house, and chef Christopher Dunn’s sausage cream gravy puts many Southern versions to shame.

Here’s the other problem. Now there are not only the best regular eggs Benedict, there’s another choice — what I’m calling “Fancy Eggs Benedict.” They come with prosciutto, pencil asparagus, grilled artichokes, english muffin and truffle vinaigrette. Photos of that, and the gorgeous Bloody Mary, after the jump.
