It’s the time of year for putting up tomatoes. Or just cooking with them instead of simply slicing and serving. And sometimes, for that, peeled is better. In this post, I’ll show you how to peel tomatoes.
I’m not saying it’s not a little bit of a pain. It is. But it only takes a few minutes, and the payoff is worth it. As you saw in the photo above, you start putting a pot of water on to boil and preparing an ice bath. Then slice an X into the bottom of each ‘mater.
Use a slotted spoon to lower the tomatoes into the boiling water. It will probably stop boiling. That’s OK.
After about 30-45 seconds, remove the tomatoes and put in the ice bath. You’ll know they’re ready when the skin looks loose and crinkly.
Then just peel the skin off from the X. If it sticks a little, use a paper towel to grab it; this gives you leverage, plus it’s dry.
A lot of times, the skin won’t come off at the very top of the tomato. That’s OK with me, because I just cut it off in order to core the tomato anyway.
Peeled tomatoes! A thing of beauty!
