It’s become a wonderful Christmas tradition among friends of Sour Cherry Farm: we take turns reading from Truman Capote’s ‘A Christmas Memory.’ It’s a heartwarming, and heartbreaking tale — a true one, they say — about a little boy and his older “friend,” a grandmotherly figure who loves to bake fruitcakes and build kites.
This year, we made a collaborative meal (we’re getting quite good at that!): Kris and Tom brought the delicious kale salad from Food 52; Irene brought a roasted pork shoulder and eggs from Stone Barns; Hunna and I made a big batch of baked polenta.
We had some new friends join us this year: Susie and Joe, friends of Kris and Tom who are also big fans of the story, and enjoy reading it aloud themselves.
Our delicious meal:
Supper. Wine. Yum.
Irene, with delicious red wine.
And the beautiful (and delicious) cupcakes that Susie brought.
Susie is from Georgia, and these are is her red velvet cake recipes, minus the dye.
A wonderful evening, indeed.
