While in Orange County, we popped by to see the controversial Orange County Government Center, a building designed by Yale School of Architecture dean Paul Rudolph and built in 1967. Like the old Whitney, designed by Marcel Bruer, it is a classic example of brutalism, a style of architecture popular in the 1950s-1970s, especially with governments and institutions.
The building has been slated for demolition, but there is a movement to try to save it. I’ll save most of the commentary for Greg, who plans to use these photos for a post on Design Notes, the blog for Design within Reach.
Here they are for posterity, though:
(PS: Please sing “Brutalism, Yeah Yeah!” to the tune of Populism, from Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Thank you.)
