The Farm’s friend Brian has an different way of keeping bees.
He uses different equipment to house the bees horizontally instead of vertically, and espouses a hands-off, no-treatment philosophy. Basically, a do-not-disturb the bees effort.
He caught a swarm, and wanted to see how they’d do, and to make room, he donated one of his hives to us. Because he built his frames to fit in our Langstroth supers, the horizontal works in the vertical, too.
And, for the first year since we started keeping bees, ours did not make it over the winter. So we were grateful to get them.
The boys unload the bees:
Now what?
Lift it up, I guess?
Yes, that works.
The hive is so healthy that Brian suggested putting an extra super on right away.
Thank you Brian!
