Sam Has the Flu

Man, it comes on fast. And I was thrown off because she threw up overnight. But they say that is a symptom in children.

I cleaned up after her, and she was resting downstairs when her cough started getting worse. Very crupe-y. So we tried a steamy bathroom. After she spent about 15 minutes in there, her breathing was so congested that she almost couldn’t get a breath in. So I took her to urgent care. They did a strep test, and recommended we go immediately to the hospital for a nebulizer with steroids, so her trachea would open up.

I resorted to the big guns.

At the hospital, the doctor immediately suspected flu and did a test. After a couple of hours of waiting, it came back positive. Strain A. No nebulizer was done, but he did give us an oral steroid to help keep the swelling down.

The next day we got a call back from urgent care. Yes, indeed, it was strep, after all. So yay. Both flu and strep. All at once!

Chicken soup for our girl.

We nursed her for four days, and she recovered and went back to school on Wednesday. At least 7 kids were out from her class, and the reports were it hit the whole school very hard. She got a flu shot the next week.
