Bar Louis in Milford

We brunched at a fine little restaurant in the basement of the Hotel Fauchere in Milford, Pennsylvania. The hotel, as the photos on the walls in the stairwells attest, has has many famous guests and visitors. Back in the 1840s, the hotel’s founder and chef, Louis Fauchere, had been head chef at Delmonico’s, arguably the most famous restaurant at the time.

The food, obviously, has been updated since then. A signature dish is sushi pizza, with ahi tuna, tobiko mayo, flying fish roe and scallion on a tempura rice crust. It was like having tuna tartare on a crunchy bed of air.

Shrimp and grits. Gulf shrimp, castle valley mill grits, achiote, Tasso ham and a sunny-side up egg, garnished with sesame seeds. I loved poking around for the little chunks of ham. The whole dish was very satisfying.

Eggs Norvegienne: poached eggs, smoked salmon, Bearnaise on an English muffin, served with Perrochet potatoes, which are as addictive as crack.

And, just for kicks, here’s a photo of the restaurant we almost went to — also part of the hotel. It’s called 403 Broad. We didn’t go because they didn’t have on the menu what Sam wanted: a hamburger and fries.

The 411 on Bar Louis.
