On a Hot Memorial Day, A Barbecue in the Orchard

The temperature hovering around 90 with almost 100 percent humidity. Well isn’t that a fine how-do-you-do-to summer? We still didn’t have the air conditioners in, but we did have a fan or two. We plugged one in to an extension cord, pulled the table into the shade of the garage, and had a good ol’ summer barbecue, starting with watermelon margaritas and ending with pie.

The table, all set to go, flowers and fan included:

Sam’s in the shade:

Margies, all good to go:

Recipe for watermelon margaritas is here: Cocktail recipe: Watermelon Margaritas.

We had drinks around the table because the porch was too hot.

I know this photo of the people isn’t so good, but I just had to include it. Look at the reflection in the window behind Leigh. Looks like a painting!

Kris’s Dad, Al, and Greg:

(And that’s Mom’s fab guacamole next to Hunna’s elbow.)

Tom and Kris, shaded by the blackberry vines:

And Sadie:

Al with Sam:

Hunna, Eamon and Leigh. Mom is blocked by a beer!

Time for supper.

Aaron Franklin’s Butcher Paper Brisket.

with Franklin Espresso Barbecue Sauce.

And Watermelon Rind Pickles:

And the holy trinity of barbecue. Potato salad (Delicious, thanks to Kris!):

Cole slaw (doctored from Old World; we added mustard, cider vinegar and celery seed):

And beans (doctored, too, with garlic, onion, jalapeño and espresso barbecue sauce):

Immediately after supper, I had to take Sam to bed. It was so hot she couldn’t sleep, so I missed dessert — and didn’t take any more photos. But the Pie Lady & Son pie was terrific, topped with vanilla ice cream. (I had some later!)

So instead, I”ll leave you with this:

Welcome to summer!
